Blood Work Clinic

The Blood Work Clinic, or Phlebotomy Clinic, is where outpatients go to get their blood drawn for various blood tests.  

Patients can have their blood drawn in the SickKids Blood Work Clinic and get laboratory tests only if they are referred to the Blood Work Clinic by a SickKids health-care team.  

Patients whose physician/nurse practitioner or clinic is not onsite (not affiliated) with SickKids should have their tests done at a laboratory in the community. 

The clinic cannot perform the following tests for Non-SickKids patients: 

• Allergy Testing: IgE specific antibodies to target allergens 
• Anti Tissue Transglutaninase (TTG) 
• Celiac disease 
• Copper 
• Vitamin B1 
• Vitamin B6
• Vitamin C 
• Vitamin K 
• Zinc

Note: This is not a complete list. 

In certain instances, the Blood Work Clinic will continue to provide services to patients up to the age of 18 years with one or more of: complex diagnosis, intellectual or physical disability. 

Important pre-appointment instructions:

The physician/nurse practitioner that referred you to the Blood Work Clinic should provide instructions about what your child can eat/drink before the appointment.  

If you have questions about what your child can consume before the appointment, please contact your child’s physician/nurse practitioner. 

Patients with an appointment at a SickKids specialty clinic (e.g., Nephrology) must check-in with their specialty clinic first.

Note: Specialty clinic registrations are dependent on their location. 

Directions:

The Blood Work Clinic is located on the Main Floor, Room M408, in the hallway between Shoppers Drug Mart and Tim Hortons.  

You do not need an appointment to visit the Blood Work Clinic. Patients and families are asked to line-up behind the red stop sign.  

You will be given a number or brought directly into the blood work draw area. 

Patients will be seen according to the following list of priorities. 

• Timed tests (i.e. tests that are time-sensitive) 
• Fasting patients (i.e. patients that have not eaten that day prior to appointment)
• Clinic patients (i.e. patients of physician or clinic onsite at SickKids) 

Clinic staff will explain all blood work procedures to you. All of our phlebotomy staff are trained and certified. Your laboratory results are strictly confidential and will be sent to your physician, nurse practitioner or clinic as soon as they are ready. Please ask your physician/nurse practitioner if you have any questions about the laboratory tests. 

Pain management:

We have tools that are used to show children that a laboratory blood draw isn't as scary as it seems. SickKids Comfort Promise bundle includes: 

• Numbing cream 
• Sucrose or breast feeding 
• Comfort positioning 
• Distraction 

Child-Life Specialists are available Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
