International Women’s Day 2020: Researchers in Profile
Allison Daniel and Isabel Potani first met in Blantyre, Malawi about four years ago. At the time, Isabel was the head nurse at the Moyo Nutritional Rehabilitation and Research Unit (Moyo) at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, and Allison was starting her PhD research on a counseling program for mothers of children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM).

Unravelling the mystery of rare diseases
When Bryson Williams-McArthur was 9, he underwent whole exome sequencing at SickKids, a sophisticated, non-targeted approach to genetic testing that takes a broad look at all 20,000 genes. This test finally gave the family a diagnosis – a very rare neurodevelopmental disorder called GRIN1.

Huntington’s disease-causing DNA repeat mutations reversed in the lab
Scientists reveal the ability to reverse repeat mutation length in the brains of a mouse model with Huntington’s disease. The team discovered a compound that targets the unusual DNA structure and was shown to reverse repeat expansions with undetectable off-target effects.
